World Rowing Masters Culminates with Success
| Three years of planning culminated this week in St. Catharines when
the city hosts the FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta at Henley Island. The Niagara Sport Commission had been part of the logistics and organizations for this event for the past 8 months.
The event hosted over 2500 athletes from 35 countries, the most ever for a World Masters Rowing Regatta in North America.
Thanks to a private fundraising campaign, government grants and event revenue, $350,000 has been raised to upgrade the facilities at
the Henley Island course. Including the purchase of a weed harvester, two floating starting towers, starting gates for masters
races and dashes, a scoreboard, digital timing system and a 46-metre
metal receiving dock for the grandstand.
Many thanks go out to event sponsors, and especially to the over 550 volunteers without whom the event would not have been possible.

Legends on the Niagara Academy Golf Tip
| |
Fitness and nutrition are
such an important part of golf that is impossible to ignore. Your mind needs
nourishment as much as your body when you're playing golf. Here are a few tips
to help you play your best when others around you tire.
Keep some energy bars
in a zip lock bag in your golf bag; they will sustain you for a couple of hours
if you're hungry.
Grab a banana and an apple as you leave home or at the
halfway house, they're a good source of potassium, fiber and carbohydrates.
Keep plenty of fresh water in your bag (2-5 liters), its important not to
dehydrate on those long hot days on the course. And last but not least, keep
away from beer and caffeine if you want to last the distance, they are
diuretics that will dehydrate you quicker than you can replenish your fluid
levels.
If you arrive at the course
with no time to tie your shoes then stop and think about the damage you could
be doing to your tight muscles. Find the time to stretch your fingers, arms,
sides, legs and most importantly your back. It doesn't take long to touch your
toes a few times or do some side stretches.
Remember, if you stay energized
until the last hole you might come out on top.
